GODSMACK's ERNA On The New Album: 'Nobody Else Is Doing What We're Doing'
April 7, 2003GODSMACK frontman Sully Erna is confident that the group's new album, "Faceless" (due April 8 through Republic/Universal Records),will help the band build upon the momentum created through the quadruple-platinum success of the group's debut and the double-platinum performance of its follow-up, "Awake".
"Nobody's doing what we're doing on this record, I guarantee it," Erna told Metal Edge magazine. "I've heard the DISTURBEDs, I've heard the KORNs, I've heard the LINKIN PARKs, the PAPA ROACHes, the STAINDs… Not disrespecting any of the other bands, but nobody is doing what we're doing. No one is playing rock music like this, and this is what rock music was built on, only with a little bit harder edge. We're not doing anything different than AEROSMITH did in their heyday in the '70s, it's just that the technology has bought heavier sounds to re-amplification and stuff like that. That's why our edge is heavier — and we're fans of METALLICA and PANTERA, so there's other things combined in there. But on this record, we all really come back to rock, and building the songs so that they jam and they don't get boring, and not worrying about shortening the guitar solos because we're over four minutes, and all that shit. We really worked hard at trying to create great songs with a good flow to them, and to be able to branch out melodically and musically. I am so proud of everyone on this record, because the playing is awesome."
